Gond Hut – Maharashtra

The remote and wild borderlands that lie between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are home to the Gond tribe, a farming community that was originally a warrior caste. Many are now engaged in laboring; growing rice, pulses and millet, and they may supplement their living through wood or bamboo cutting and selling and the harvesting of other forest produce.

The Gond hut is one of the simplest dwellings in Shilpgram. The walls of the hut are made using a bamboo frame as the base. Other bamboo poles, split cane, twigs, and grasses are intertwined, and finally, mud is slapped on to add insulation and protection from the elements. In a nutshell, all the materials are locally abundant, free and easily assembled.
